Reflecting its academic role in addressing contemporary environmental issues, Dr. Khalid Abd Ali, Assistant Dean of the College of Engineering at Al-Farabi University, participated in the scientific seminar titled: “Chemical Refinery Waste: Between Pollution and Sustainability”. The seminar was organized in cooperation with the University of Technology, the Ministry of Environment, the Iraqi Parliament, Al-Farabi University, and the National Youth Team for Climate Change.
Seminar Pillars and Discussions: The seminar featured several scientific lectures focusing on critical environmental topics, including:
- Petroleum Pollutants: Highlighting waste generated by oil refineries in Iraq, particularly “black oil” and heavy metals.
- Environmental Challenges: Discussing risks related to air and water quality, as well as health hazards resulting from chemical pollution.
- Sustainability Solutions: Proposing technical solutions aimed at mitigating environmental impacts and fostering sustainability concepts within the petroleum sector.
Sustainable Development Goals: This participation supports the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), specifically Goal 4, which focuses on enhancing quality education and applied learning by linking academic research with urgent environmental and societal issues.
