The Department of Accounting and Banking Sciences at Al-Farabi University College organized a scientific symposium titled “The Role of Islamic Banks in Advancing Green Banking”, under the patronage of Prof. Dr. Ahmed Gailan Abdullah, Dean of the College, and with the supervision and presence of Dr. Adnan Al-Azzawi, Assistant Dean for Scientific Affairs, Dr. Ali Mashali, Assistant Dean for Administrative Affairs, and Prof. Dr. Hanaa Abdul Ghafar, Head of the Department.
The symposium featured a distinguished panel of experts, including Prof. Dr. Osama Abdul Majeed, Professor of Islamic Banking and session chair; Prof. Dr. Sadiq Rashid Al-Shammari, Chairman of the Board of Al-Nasek Islamic Bank; Prof. Dr. Ahmed Yaseen Abdul, lecturer at the College of Administration and Economics, Al-Iraqia University; and Mr. Ahmed Yousif, Director of the Banking Supervision Department at the Central Bank of Iraq. Ms. Sara Adnan Radam, the department’s rapporteur, served as the symposium moderator.
A large audience of faculty members, students, and college staff attended the event, which highlighted the importance of green banking and sustainability in the Islamic banking sector. This initiative aligns with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) for 2030, specifically SDG 16, which focuses on peace, justice, and strong institutions, by raising awareness, enhancing skills, and building capacity for policymakers and legislators in Islamic banking.
The symposium was held on Monday, February 10, 2025, and served as an important platform to discuss the challenges and opportunities of green banking and its role in achieving financial and economic sustainability.
