Al-Farabi University Seminar Highlights Women’s Rights in the New Labor and Social Security Law

In alignment with the National Strategy for Iraqi Women 2026, the Women’s Affairs Division at Al-Farabi University, in collaboration with the College of Law, organized a specialized legal seminar titled: “Labor Law and Social Security.”

Seminar Details: The seminar was held on Monday, February 9, 2026, and presented by Assistant Professor Dr. Iman Jassam Mohammed (Associate Dean for Scientific Affairs at the College of Law). The session focused on the legal frameworks supporting women’s economic empowerment.

Key Legal Pillars:

  • Working Women’s Rights: Highlighting legal provisions that prohibit wage discrimination and ensure a safe work environment, with a focus on protecting pregnant and breastfeeding employees.
  • Social Security Law No. 18 of 2023: Explaining the advantages of the new law, which expands protection to include workers in the informal sector and self-employed individuals.
  • Retirement and Maternity Benefits: Clarifying special exceptions for women regarding retirement age and service years, and activating the “Maternity System” to ensure financial rights during care periods.
  • Optional Contribution: Outlining how individuals can benefit from the optional social security contribution to secure a future pension.

The seminar witnessed significant attendance and interaction from university staff and students, with discussions focusing on promoting social justice and ensuring income protection during old age or disability.
